Introduction to Radiocarbon Determination by the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Method

چکیده

There are three principal isotopes of carbon which occur naturally C, C (both stable) and C (unstable or radioactive). These isotopes are present in the following amounts C 98.89%, C 1.11%, and C 0.00000000010%. Thus, one carbon-14 atom exists in nature for every 1,000,000,000,000 or (1 in a trillion) carbon-12 atoms in living material. The radiocarbon method is based on the rate of decay of the radioactive or unstable carbon isotope 14 (C), which is formed in the upper atmosphere through the effect of cosmic ray neutrons upon nitrogen-14.

Retraction: Determination of protein-ligand interactions using accelerator mass spectrometry: modified crosslinking assay.

A highly sensitive detection method for the determination of protein-ligand interactions has been developed. Radiocarbon-labeled 17beta-estradiol was incubated with estrogen receptor-alpha; as a selective binding partner, and covalently attached using crosslinking agents, to form covalently linked protein-ligand complexes. After separation using a denaturing gel, the (14)C content in the sliced...

Fifty Years of Radiocarbon Dating

The history of radiocarbon dating through the 20th century is presented, focusing on the work of Willard F. Libby, who introduced radiocarbon dating in 1949, and its application during the following 50 years. Topics include an explanation of radiocarbon dating, by which the age of organic matter can be determined; difficulties Libby encountered in developing processes for accurate measurements;...

Prime Lab Sample Handling and Data Analysis for Accelerator- Based Biomedical Radiocarbon Analysis

Processing and measurement of 200 biomedical samples has provided an opportunity to better understand the characteristics of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) analysis of such samples. We have utilized established procedures (Vogel 1992) and developed new methods for handling various biological samples. We have included secondary standards of known isotope ratio for all assays. A method of de...

Accelerator mass spectrometry for quantitative in vivo tracing.

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) counts individual rare, usually radio-, isotopes such as radiocarbon at high efficiency and specificity in milligram-sized samples. AMS traces very low chemical doses (micrograms) and radiative doses (100 Bq) of isotope-labeled compounds in animal models and directly in humans for pharmaceutical, nutritional, or toxicological research. Absorption, metabolism,...
